History has been created in Tripura Health service as the doctors  successfully transplanted kidney in GB Hospital—for the first time in the state.  Both the donor and the recipient are stable and they are now kept under close monitoring.

The donor is mother Munna Saha Sutradhar -43 years old and the recipient is her son Subham Saha -20 years old.

The operation took about 5.30 hours. Both the donor and the recipient were taken to the operation theatre at 8 am in the morning and the doctors started operation at 8.30 am. It ended at 2.30 pm.

There were as many as 32 healthcare staff including doctors, nurses, OT assistants et al. The operation team included Dr.Bijit Lodh, Urologist, Dr.Manas Gope, Nephrologist, Dr.Samaresh Paul, Nephrologist, Dr. Mukut Debnath, Urologist and Dr Bhaskar Majumdar, Anupam Chakrabarty and Dr Tapan Debbarma as anaesthetists. Medical Superintendent of GBP Hospital Dr. Sankar Chakraborty said the process started in January this year for collaboration, training and other medical matters and finally the kidney transplant was successfully performed at the Super-speciality Block of the hospital on Monday. For this kidney transplant very recently the state government had signed a five year MoU with Srija Hospitals, Manipur. For this transplant twelve doctors from Manipur led by the consultant nephrologist Guliver Potsangbam came to Tripura. The state government has also borne all the expenses incurred for their visit to the state. They will be coming to Tripura again in future if necessary for another transplant.

According to the Medical Superintendent, the entire cost of the Kidney Transplant has been borne by the state government. He said, the donor- recipient duo is stable post operation.

An important part of the operation - counselling the patients was done by Nabanita Banik and Biomedical engineer Ratul Dey and his team also had a pivotal role in making the technical infrastructures ready.

Dr Kanak Chowdhury , Deputy MS said, both of them -the mother and her son-will remain under close monitoring for at least seven days and the next protocol would then be taken up.

“The operation was successful. But now the main task is to ensure that the recipient’s body does not develop ‘graft rejection’. And for that some medicines would be given. That would also mean reduction of natural immunity of the patient’s body. So, strict protocol would also be maintained to prevent any sort of infection”.

Evidently happy at the success of the highly complex surgery and record in the medical history of the state Dr Chowdhury congratulated the doctors and other staff involved in the whole process.

As the news of successful first Kidney transplant of the state became known entire state went aflame with happiness. Now, patients suffering kidney problems would not have to go out side of the state and spend huge money if a transplant is required. This can be done in GB hospital itself and by our own doctors.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha only recently had announced that the first kidney transplant would be undertaken in GB Hospital by the doctors of the state on July 8. Since then all were sitting cross fingered and with a baited breath. Now they are all relieved and jubilant

“Today's achievement will be marked as a milestone in the state's medical services. It's something that seemed impossible just a few days ago. As a result of the state government's continuous efforts to improve healthcare services, today, a critical surgery like a Kidney Transplant has become possible in the state. I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the medical team and other health staff involved in this surgery. I also wish for the speedy recovery of both the kidney donor and recipient,” Dr. Saha wrote on X.
